Ocumare is a small town on the Venezuelan coast in the state of Aragua. This was an area where many African slaves were sent during the colonial period, and it retains a strong African feel to this day. The two most important celebrations of the year are the feast of San Juan (St John the Baptist) and the Diablos Danzantes (Dancing Devils), both of which are famous across Venezuela and beyond. San Juan sees several days and nights of processions with drumming, singing and dancing, including a “pilgrimage” down to the sea at La Boca. The Diablos Danzantes takes place on a single day, Corpus Christi, though rehearsals start months beforehand; here the focus is firmly on the dancing-procession, though it is accompanied by simple music on cuatro and maracas.

Las dos fiestas más importantes del año son la fiesta de San Juan y los Diablos Danzantes, los cuales son famosos en Venezuela y más allá. San Juan se desarrolla a lo largo de varios días y noches de desfiles con tambores, cantando y bailando, e incluye una “peregrinación” hacia el mar en La Boca. Los Diablos Danzantes se lleva a cabo en un solo día, el Corpus Christi, aunque los ensayos comienzan meses antes.
