José Luis is a young percussionist, aged seven when I first met him, who is studying at the Guanare núcleo of El Sistema, though he lives in Barinas. His mother, Astrid, drives him and his younger sister over to the núcleo every afternoon for lessons or practice. Although there are some amateur musicians in the family, it would not be considered a family of musicians, yet José Luis has established a name for himself already in Venezuela – as “The Volcano of the Caribbean” – having been selected for the National Children’s Orchestra at the age of seven and appeared as a soloist on important stages and on TV.
José Luis es un joven percusionista que tenía 7 años cuando lo conocí. Es estudiante en el núcleo de El Sistema en Guanare, a pesar de vivir en Barinas. Su madre, Astrid, lo lleva a él y a su hermana menor hasta el núcleo todas las tardes para recibir clases o practicar. Aunque hay algunos músicos amateur en la familia, no se considera una familia de músicos, sin embargo José Luis ya se conoce en Venezuela – como “el Volcán del Caribe.” Fue seleccionado para la Orquesta Nacional Infantil a los 7 años y ha sido solista en importantes escenarios y en la TV.
