Pundalik Bhagwat is a Maharashtrian Brahman settled in Varanasi. In addition to being a superb tabla player, one of the most saught-after accompanists of Varanasi, he is an accomplished vocalist. He is employed by the Music College of Banaras Hindu University. Although music has been in his family for three generations, he is not from a hereditary caste of musicians, and as such he has a very progressive refreshing attitude to the teaching of music.  His sons Pushkar (2004) and Purnish (2001) are both learning tabla and vocal music, but Pushkar specialises in tabla while Purnish specialises in singing.
